Top of the mornin’ to ya. My name is Rebecca Mc Donnell but most people know me as Becky. I moved to Florida when I was thirteen years old and I’ve loved every sun drenched minute of it. It was the perfect move for me since I have loved Disney, comic books and superhero movies all of my life. That love is what pushed me into cosplaying which is now my favorite pastime. I have been with Costumers with a Cause for five years now and hope to be with them for many more years. Through visiting children with CwC, I have learned how much I want to work with kids. Hence, I am currently a professional private nanny and getting my bachelor’s degree in business and child education.
Q & A
How did you learn of Costumers with a Cause?
I attended Megacon in 2017 and signed up with my older sister.
What is/was your favorite experience when in costume and why?
I was dressed as Mary Poppins and a little girl pulled me aside and asked for some advice. She explained she was being bullied in school and that she felt as if no one would understand. I told her that she was sweeter than sugar and that if she kept her head high and always remembered her worth their words would no longer sting. She whispered into my ear “I knew you were real”, gave me the biggest hug, and off she went.
Do you have a favorite superhero? If yes, who and why?
My favorite super hero is Batman. The reason for that is because he has no powers whatsoever and instead deals with a significant amount of trauma. The kinds of trauma that often creates super villains. But instead he goes out of his way to uphold moral order and create good. The best thing about him is that it isn’t easy for him to do this, but he does it anyway.
If you could cure any disease or disability, which would you cure?
Cancer plagues so many in the world. I have lost family to it and I’ve even had to deal with my own scares and benign tumors. If there was a cure for cancer the world be so much more hopeful, I think.
What hobbies do you have outside of CwC?
I love to play video games, paint, work out, and create costumes and make up looks just for my own enjoyment.
The world is your oyster. You can go anywhere and do anything for as long as you’d like. Where would you go and what would you do?
I think i would travel to New Zealand and finally explore that beautiful country. I would want to see the locations where Lord of the Rings was filmed as well as try the incredible food.
Are there any causes or foundations that come close to your heart? If yes, which ones? Why?
My father has struggled with ankylosing spondylitis since he was 20 years old. It causes him pain everyday as well as in recent years caused some serious lung damage and breathing issues. That is why the SAA, an organization created to improve the loves of those who suffer from this disease and similar, is an organization that comes very near and dear to my heart.
Who are your real-life heroes?
My dad is a real super hero. No matter how much pain or how sick he still provides for my family everyday. He still plays, laughs, and jokes. He never let’s his disease stop him from living. He is my best friend.
What is your favorite childhood memory?
One of my favorite child hood memories is fishing trash from a river with my grandfather. He hates how polluted it would get after a bunch of Irish lads would drink too much on a Friday night. So on a Saturday morning we would go together and fish garbage from the lake. We would then sit down and feed the ducks who lived there.
Tell us one thing you think would surprise us.
I was born and raised in Ireland till I moved to America when I was 14. I go home and visit at least once a year and yes I still have my accent (although I use an American one when I am in character).
