How did you first get involved with Costumers with a Cause, and what has been your favorite or most memorable event so far and what made it memorable?
I have been interested in the concept of causeplaying since I had a group of Stormtroopers visit the local Gamestop I was managing in 2006. I kept saying “one day, I want to do that.” and put it off for years and years due to struggles I had with my weight. In 2021, I got bariatric surgery, have since lost over 200lbs, and found the confidence to be able to dress up and DO what I dreamed of doing. So once I was able to fit in a non-specialty order flightsuit, I got to work making my Ghostbusters cosplay and searched for local causeplaying in my area.
I then reached out to Jack Hill for more info. The rest, as they say, was history! My most memorable event with CWC so far would either be working the table at Ancient City Con and meeting Dana, who is just a whirlwind of positive energy, or my very first event at the 2022 Jax Heart Walk. I was nervous and had never worn cosplay attire in my life and didn’t know what to expect. I met Jack in person, who was super warm and welcoming, and a few more of my new family. It was unlike anything I had ever done before and I am so glad I joined.
Our members put on many faces in CWC. What is your favorite character you represent and what is it that you like about that character?
I currently only have one character, which is my own Ghostbuster, which I try to keep relatively close to screen accurate. It’s funny, I also play World of Warcraft and my friends joke that I am a “one-toon Andy” because I only play one character there as well. However, unlike in WoW, I do plan to make an alt (if you know, you know), and eventually build out a Stormtrooper suit and maybe a Ted Kord Blue Beetle II.
Based on your experiences with us, how would you describe what we do to someone who knows absolutely nothing about us or who we are?
I’ve had to do this a number of times already, haha. What we do is we dress up as popular characters and help local charities and community outreach functions generate smiles, hope, laughter, and fun.
What do you feel are your best assets, talents, gifts, etc., are, and how did you acquire them?
I’d like to think some of my best qualities in and out of CWC are my people and leadership skills, and ability to fix/create things. I had always worked retail until very recently, which as most know, can be a test to your people skills. This lead me to leadership, which I genuinely enjoy doing. I run a guild of about 1500 World of Warcraft players and our guilds Discord server. I like helping people and being part of a leadership team can put you in a better position to be able to do more for those around you and help make the changes that benefit everyone. And lastly, fixing, creating, and all around tinkering is something I have a natural knack for. Much of my Proton Pack has been altered and I fully 3d printed and assembled my ghost trap. Ask about it, and I’ll gladly show it off! Haha
It seems that lately we are hearing about more and more children who are being bullied or have self-esteem issues, body issues, etc. If a child came to you with any one of the many issues you are aware of, what advice would you give them?
My own children have dealt with bullies. My son can be more than a little awkward and my daughter is special needs, so they can occasionally struggle with being different. I always remind them that unfortunately, while kids can be cruel, it’s almost always a temporary situation. Always, always, always talk to someone about it. Your friends, your family, your school, everyone is in your corner and no one likes a bully. Talk to me or anyone you love if you’re having struggles. There is NO reason to keep them inside. We are a team. We fight together.
Imagine: You are on a deserted island. There is absolutely no way off this island. You are totally alone, with the exception of a magic genie who wants to grant you 3 wishes. Getting off the island isn’t one of them. What would your 3 wishes be and why?
Can I wish for my friends to be able to come to me? Haha. If not, I’d like the hookup with 1.) A nice place to live at least. 2.) I’m gonna need some pretty solid electronics (don’t play me with the no electricity thing, genie… I see you trying to get me there) and 3.) If I don’t need to wish for the electricity to run my toys… then mayyyyybe a nice, fully stocked, magically refilling bar. Hey, mixology is fun! And I’m on an island, after all!
Many of our members tell us stories of special situations or circumstances in their own personal lives which causes them to have a special place in their heart for charity organizations. Is there any charity or organization that holds a special place in your heart?
First Coast No More Homeless Pets saved my cat, Finn. I was there the day he was born and every single day since he was old enough to take back home. He’s my best pal and he simply wouldn’t be here if not for them. He was acting very strangely so I took him to the local vet and they told me he had a urinary blockage and that his potassium levels had skyrocketed to the point that they aren’t sure how he hadn’t gone in to cardiac arrest. Unfortunately, this was going to be a multi thousand dollar surgery and I didn’t have a penny to pay for it. They suggested FCNMHP and said that they can at least do payment plans, unlike most vets. After taking him in, they offered to do the surgery completely free and now Finn is perfectly happy and healthy, save for the special food he gets now.
What is your favorite amusement park, and what is your favorite ride within that park?
Disney World! I’m just a big kid and I’m thankful that magic never wore off for me. People used to ask “I’m sure you eventually get sick of it, right?” But honestly… no. I don’t. Lol. I think my favorite ride would have to be the slow, show-like experiences. I LOVE rides like Spaceship Earth, Soarin’, and the old Great Movie Ride.
Secret time: What is one thing about you that you think would surprise someone who thinks they know you pretty well.
When I was in high school, my friends and I started an Indy wrestling federation called Pure Wrestling Entertainment. We had a real ring, wrote out all the spots, and put on a few local shows. It was an amazing time. Another thing that may surprise people is through high school, I was a HUGE Juggalo (fan of the band ICP). My, my, how times have changed.
Who is someone you really admire? They can be real or fictional, alive or passed on. What is it about them that you admire and why?
Steve Jobs was just an absolute madman with a dream and the drive to get it done. He wasn’t a perfect person by any means, but he was a dreamer. And more than that, he was a doer. I think many people are afraid to dream too big and even more afraid to try to make those dreams a reality. He did both and left an indelible mark on technology.
